This shot is facing west, and shows some of the blue heron nests in the trees behind our building. The herons took a liking to this area last year and we have spotted six so far. The Great Blue Heron has been identified as a species at risk. In 2008 in the lower Fraser Valley and Sunshine Coast there were only 29 known colonies of this magnificent bird.

If you're patient you'll see them coming and going, preening and eating. The picture quality is better during cloudy days (and the nests are more visible) as the camera is pointing at the sun in the afternoon.

To learn more about herons, see the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blue_Heron .

CFIS is a leader in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and learning in sustainability, social policy, and human health. See www.cfis.ubc.ca for more details.
