Happy Advent / Feliz Adviento 2008! Annunciata Parish, located on Chicago's South-East Side, has been staffed by the Friar Servants of Mary since its founding in 1941. Just south of the Skyway and on the border with Indiana, Annunciata was located in the heart of Chicago's steel producing center. The steel mills having closed in the 1970s-80s, the quiet residential neighborhood has remained home to city workers (police officers, firefighters, teachers, etc) of all kinds. Ethnically, the parish is a mix of people of Yugoslavian (Croatian, Slovenian), Polish and Mexican decent. Since 2002, Annunciata celebrates a Spanish Mass on Sundays (in addition to three English Masses) and each December hosts a Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Annunciata School (staffed originally by the Servite Ladysmith Sisters) continues to have an outstanding academic reputation. It is the last Catholic Elementary School on the East Side. As "Home of the Raiders," it has an excellent athletic tradition as well. Active Organizations include the Knights of Columbus (Trinity Council #3755), Servite Secular Order, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Our Lady of Guadalupe Society, Annunciata Athletic Association, Alumni Association, Seniors' Club, AYO-Youth Group. |
